Abstract
<PICT:0419170/III/1> Fermented musts are distilled to recover acetone, ethyl alcohol, and butyl alcohol in an apparatus in which the must delivered through a pipe 1 is preheated to 40--50 DEG C., in a heat exchanger D, and to 100 DEG C. in a recuperator C, and is then supplied through a pipe 3 to the upper part of a column A, A<1> from which the acetone vapours pass off and are rectified in a column B. Vapours pass off through the exchanger D to condensers E<1>, E and the condensate is returned to the column through pipes 5, 4 for pasteurization, the purified acetone being removed through a pipe 6 to a cooler R and test safe 7 while residual liquid is returned from the base of the column to the column A, A<1>. The must descending to the lower part A is freed from ethyl and butyl alcohol and these vapours are used in part for the distillation of the acetone while the remainder are led through a pipe 10 to the base of a column G, in which ethyl alcohol is separated in known manner with the aid of reflux from a condenser H and is removed through a pipe 12 to a cooler J. The butyl alcohol fraction is removed through a pipe 14 and cooler S to a decanter I where it separates into two layers. The upper layer comprising 80 per cent butyl alcohol is dehydrated in a column K from which anhydrous butyl alcohol is removed at the base while the azeotropic mixture distilling off at the top is condensed in a condenser M and returned to the column G. The lower aqueous layer is returned through the recuperator C to the column A. Traces of butyric acid are removed in a flask P containing chalk or alkali.
