Abstract

Tall oil is subjected to two-stage fractional distillation under reduced pressure (below 20 mm. Hg) and in the presence of steam. The bulk of the fatty acid content of the oil is taken overhead in the first stage; and the bottoms from the first stage are separated, in the second stage, into residual fatty acids and resin acids as two separate distillates, a pitch together with other non-volatile components as residue. The oil is preferably distilled in layers of less than 3 cm. thickness; and the rate of flow is adjusted so that the time-of-residence in <PICT:0698548/III/1> the apparatus is less than 15 minutes. Tall oil containing 45 per cent resin acids, 45 per cent fatty acids, 2 per cent hydroxy-acids and 8 per cent unsaponifiable matter, is supplied through line 1 into fractionating column 2, and through line 23 into still 3. The oil supplied through line 1 is uniformly distributed over the whole crosssection of the column. The still 3 is supplied through line 4 with high-pressure wet steam. The column is maintained under a pressure less than 20 mm. Hg. by condensers (not shown) connected to pipe 12. The head of the column is maintained at about 200 DEG C by a dephlegmator (not shown). The overhead vapours are passed to cooler 6, maintained at about 150 DEG -180 DEG C, wherein C18 fatty acids are condensed; the condensate is collected in container 7. The uncondensed vapours pass-on to cooler 9 wherein C18 fatty acids are condensed. The lower fatty acids and steam are led-off to further condensers through pipe 12. The residue from still 3 is fed through pipe 13 into the still 14 of column 16, which is also maintained under a pressure less than 20 mm. Steam at about 290 DEG -310 DEG C is passed into the still 14 through pipe 15, and the head of column 16 is maintained at 190 DEG -200 DEG C. Residual fatty acids are withdrawn from the head of column 16 through pipe 17, pure resin acids are run-off through pipe 20, a non-volatile residue is drawn-off through pipe 22. The residual fatty acids may be fed to the apparatus wherein fractional condensation of the bulk of the fatty acids is being effected. Specification 640,244 is referred to.
