Abstract

419,150. Adding rotary motions. FERRANTI, Ltd., and PRINCE, J., Hollinwood, Lancashire. May 2, 1933, Nos. 12955/33, 16392 /33, and 13239/34. [Class 80 (i).] Mechanism for adding together two motions, such as those obtained from an electricity consumption meter and a basic charge meter, comprises an overrunnable driving connection between one motion and a motion summation member and means serving automatically either to establish or to break momentary driving connection between the other motion and the motion summation member. In the form shown in Fig. 1, motion is produced in the shaft 3 from both the meter 15 and a basic charge motor 14. The meter rotates through reducing gearing a squared shaft 7 carrying a slidable worm 6, spring-pressed axially against a slidable but non-rotatable ring 8. The worm engages a worm-wheel 2 carrying a pawl 5 which engages a ratchet wheel 4 on the shaft 3. The motor 14 constantly rotates a wheel 12 carrying a stepped cam 13 engaging the ring 8, which is thus slid to the left and imparts a rotation to the worm wheel 2 additional to that produced by the rotation of the shaft 7 from the meter 15. When the step on the cam 13 reaches the step on the ring 8 the worm 6 is suddenly drawn back to the right, the pawl 5 sliding over the teeth of the ratchet wheel 4. The motion of the shaft 3 is transmitted to the planet-carrying arm 29 on the shaft 28, which carries the arm 27 operating the cut-off switch. The apparatus is reset by turning the coin-operated member 24, which rotates the shaft 28 backwards through the bevel gear 22 and simultaneously winds up a spring 19 connected through a friction clutch and a pinion 18 to the gear 17 driving the shaft 7, to provide energy for the switch-disengaging movement. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the motion of the basic charge motor 14 is communicated to the motion summation shaft 3 through a worm wheel 2 carrying a spring 30 engaging the teeth of a star-wheel 3<a>. The additional motion from the meter 15 is derived from gearwheels 36 frictionally mounted on pins on a disc 32 so as to engage a gear 38 on the shaft 3. The disc 32 tends to be rotated by a spring 39 wound up through gears 20<a>, 21, 22 from the coin-operated member 24, and is permitted to rotate at intervals by an escapement comprising a short worm 34 driven from the meter 15 and engaging pairs of teeth 33 at opposite sides of the disc 32. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the gear 52 is continuously rotated from the basic charge motor through a sleeve 48, spur gears 47, 46, helical gears 44, 40 and ratchet gear 42. The meter spindle 50 carries a cam 49 which moves the counter-shaft 45 longitudinally so as to give an additional rotation to the member 52, the shaft springing back under the action of a spring 57 when the step of the cam is passed.
