384,128. Electric clocks. STOCKALL, MARPLES, & CO., Ltd. and STOCKALL, J. J., 6, Clerkenwell Road, London. Feb. 6, 1932, No. 3592. [Class 139.] Overwinding, preventing.-In a synchronousmotor clock, the motor a drives the clock hands directly, and the hands are geared to the winding wheel c of a spring d for striking, chiming, or alarm mechanism ; there being a free-wheel clutch between the hand gearing and the motor. The motor, through gearing b, l, k, i, drives a wheel c one revolution an hour. Wheel c is rigid with a shaft which also has fixed to it one end of the spring d; the latter being in a barrel g rigid with the cam wheel h controlling the striking hammer. Wheel c is also geared to drive the minute arbor e. To enable the hands to be set forward the drive between motor a and wheel c includes a pawl k on wheel l, which engages a ratchet i rigid with wheel c. When the hands are set forward wheel i moves ahead of pawl k and the spring d is wound up : to prevent overwinding, however, the spring is frictionally connected to the barrel g by means of an outer convolution d<1>. To reduce backlash of the minute hand, the shaft e has a ratchet m with fine teeth which coact with a pawl n on the frame. Additional spring drums may be geared to wheel c for operating different striking or chiming movements. Cam wheel h may be replaced by a chiming barrel.
