Abstract
418,156. Stencilling-machines. ARMSTRONG CORK CO., Lancaster, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Berger, J. L. ; 1059, Locust Street, Columbia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) June 6, 1933, No. 16246. Convention date, June 14, 1932. [Class 140.] In stencilling granular inlaying composition, for example in the manufacture of moulded inlaid linoleum, the composition is fed to the openings of the stencil and an inclined blade or brush is moved across the openings to compress the composition therein. The composition is fed from a hopper 19, Fig. 1, wherein it is uniformly distributed by a screw conveyer to a measuring device comprising a plurality of vanes 15, Fig. 3, rotating within a shell 17 having intake and discharge openings 18, 181. The measuring device is rotated by star wheels 20 operated by spaced lugs 21 on an endless chain 10. The composition is spread by metal or rubber scraper blades 28 attached to buckets 2<a>-2<i> which are moved across a stencil 5 by the chain 10. Successive blades are arranged at decreasing angles with respect to the stencil, so that the composition is ultimately compacted in the stencil openings. The buckets 2<a>-2<@i> serve to convey excess composition away from the stencil and discharge it into a metal guard 30 or direct into the hopper 19 by means of a hinged bottom which is unlatched by contacting with a slide-block 52. Preferably, the bucket 2<@i> is provided with a scraper blade to prevent any composition travelling down a guard 51 into the stencil openings when the mechanism is stationary. An additional guard 55 is provided above the stencil and is cleaned by a brush 56 which is held out of operative position when travelling over the stencil. The machine is provided with automatic starting and stopping switches 60, 61 in series, which are respectively operated by the raising and lowering of the stencil plate 5 and the passage of a bucket past an operating arm 63.
