Abstract

416,782. Lifts; distributing stress uniformly. EXPRESS LIFT CO., Ltd., and STEVENS, J. W., Greycoat Street, Victoria Street, London. Feb. 18, 1933, No. 5067. [Classes 78 (ii) and 78 (iii).] Travelling towers in general, and more especially those which support a lift cage travelling on guides inside them, are prevented from distortion by a system of tensioned ropes and counterweights which equalize the hauling strain. The invention is applicable specially to storied garages wherein ranges of storage compartments situated at different levels are served by the traversing of the tower and raising and lowering of the lift. Fig. 3 shows one arrangement in which ropes 6 fixed at different levels to the tower are given a few turns round drums 16 and then pass to a single counterweight 7 on each side of the tower. By rotating the drums simultaneously in opposite directions, through the medium of the motor 20 and bevel shaft 19, one weight 7 may be raised and the other one simultaneously lowered, thus effecting the traversing of the suspended tower on the runway 5. The drums 16 may be omitted at one side of the appliance, the traversing in one direction then being effected by the one counterweight when the opposite one is raised by the driving-gear. The two ropes 6 at one level may be replaced by a single rope connected at two points to the tower. The lift 2 is raised and lowered by hoisting-gear 3 on the travelling carriage supporting the tower. Figs. 1 and 2 show a modified arrangement in which the ropes 6 pass upwards over drums 9 on a driven shaft 11 and thence round pulleys 15 on a common counterweight 7 to a fixed point. Where two towers are used in the same garage well, interlocking means is provided for the driving- gear to prevent collision, and also so that they can be operated as a unit when desired.
