[Class 112.] In a zig-zag stitching machine, the vibratory needle bar gate is connected to a pitman pivoted at one end to a bracket arm and at the other to a yoke engaging a cam, the pitman being guided by an angularly adjustable guide-head. The vibrating mechanism may be rendered inoperative to effect ordinary stitching. To convert the otherwise idle laterally vibratory movement of the pitman 34, imparted by the cam 40, into effective endwise movements to impart swing- ing movements to the needle bar gate 21, a guide roller 48 is secured thereon, near the yoke 35. The roller 48 moves in an arcuate guideway 49 in the head 50. This head has a hub 52 passing through an aperture 53 in the cavity 51. The guide head abuts against the end of a bearing 56 for the adjusting shaft 55 which carries a hand lever 58 with a graduated segmental flange 59 co-operating with a pointer 60. The throw of the hand lever 58 is limited in the direction by a stop screw 61 which locates the guide head 50 in its zero position, i.e. the position in which the curved guideway 49 is concentric with the pivot screw 33, so that the pitman performs idle lateral vibrations and does not swing the needle, gate. As the hand lever is moved, the guide head 50 is angularly adjusted so that the travel of the guide roller 48 in the guideway 49 effects endwise reciprocation of the pitman and causes lateral vibration of the needle gate.
