[Classes 78 (ii) and 78 (v).] Lifts are worked by one or more units each comprising a starter electric motor A and a driver electric motor B geared together by a variable-speed belt L and pulleys M, M<1>, M<2>, M<3>. The pulleys are controlled by a solenoid T acting through rods U and levers V gradually to change the gearing between the starter A and driver B from low to high, the starter A being switched out when the driver has attained its full speed. Fig. 3 shows two such units driving through worm gearing P, P<1> two winding drums C, C<1> which are geared together at N, N', N<2>, N3 to rotate in opposite directions. Each end of the lift cable H is attached to a drum C, C <1>, the bight passing round an adjusting pulley D on the lift. When one unit only is employed, one end of the cable is anchored and the cable passes over two pulleys, one of which is geared to the drum C by wheels N, N<1>, N<2>, N<3>. In each case the two drums, or the drum and driven pulley, are spaced apart sufficiently far for the pulley D, with its supporting brackets, to rise between should the lift fail to stop at its uppermost platform level, thus bringing the mechanism to rest by the opposition of the tensioned cable.
