Abstract

A solution of chlorinated rubber is emulsified or dispersed in a liquid medium which is immiscible with the solvent, and a non-solvent for chlorinated rubber, and the emulsion is heated to evaporate the solvent and leave a cellular product. Water is a suitable liquid medium, and the solvent is preferably one with a lower boiling point, or which volatilizes in steam. The viscosity of the solution should not be so high that emulsification is difficult. The emulsion may be injected into a volume of heated and agitated medium if desired, under reduced pressure, in which case small pieces of cellular chlorinated rubber are produced, or the emulsion may be filled into a mould and heated to produce a cellular block. In the latter case, the addition of plasticizers such as tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, chlorinated naphthalene is preferably avoided; otherwise they and fillers, dyes &c. may be added.
