Abstract

415,247. Making flanged paper &c. articles. TAYLOR, E. Z., 377, Oraton Street, Newark, New Jersey, U.S.A. July 6, 1933, No. 19171. [Class 100 (ii).] Flanged articles such as box parts, caps, or covers are made by forcing a blank A of paper or like material into a die 6 by means of a plunger 2 eccentrically-mounted on the end of a continuously-rotating spindle 1. The plunger 2 has a slightly less diameter than the inner diameter of the flanged article, and preferably is freely rotatable on its spindle so that due to its eccentric mounting it moves horizontally along the die 6 to roll out the flange and prevent fracture thereof. Where articles of non-circular form are being made, the parts 2, 6 are of the shape required, and the plunger 2 must be rotatable or its spindle 1. Instead of a rolling action, an ironing action is obtained in these circumstances. A spring-pressed toothed ring 9 on the plunger co-operates with a toothed surface 7 on the die 6 so as to keep the edges of the blank A flat as it is drawn into the die. A device 11 is provided for ejecting the articles from the die 6.
