Abstract

415,129. Electrically-tripped switches. CRABTREE, J. A., Endwood, Little Aston Park, Sutton Coldfield. Dec. 20, 1932, Nos. 35911/33, (divided on 415,393), and 12481/33. [Class 38 (v).] Circuit-breakers of the type in which the contacts are mechanically locked in the closed position, comprise a closing and locking toggle mechanism which has articulated connection with a resetting handle and is maintained in locking condition by a release - operable trip - catch. The latter is adapted to function as a toggle-anchorage or fulcrum that enables the contacts to be closed and locked by toggle action during the switch-closing actuation of the said handle. The movable contact B is mounted on a spring-arm Bland acted on by a roller b<2> on a lever b, which is pivoted at b<1> to a frame D (shown dotted) in which is also pivoted at C<1> the operating handle C. Pivoted to the latter at a<3> and to lever b is a main toggle a, a<1>, to the common pivot a<2> of which is connected an auxiliary toggle e, f, of which member f is a lever pivoted at f<2> in the frame D and provided with an arm f<3>, co-operating with a latch part g<1> of a trip-catch g for keeping the breaker closed. g is pivoted to D at g<2> and urged by a spring g<3> into the position shown in Fig. 1, in which an overhead plunger i can knock up the arm g<5> or a thermal release such as a bimetal strip h can deflect an arm g<4>. When g is deflected, the spring arm B<1> causes the collapse of the toggles (Fig. 2). Unless the handle C is held manually, it moves to the down position under the action of a light spring connected between the pivot a<3> and a stop, so resetting the lever f behind the latch g<1>; upward movement of C then reclosing the breaker. If the handle C is not moved downwards by the opening of the breaker, it must be moved manually before reclosure can be effected. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), b is dispensed with and a<1> is of insulating material and pivoted to an arm fixed to B<1>.
