414,495. Cutter-chains. GERDETZ, L. F., c/o Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co., Reading Terminal, Philadelphia, U.S.A. June 12, 1933, No. 16712. Convention date, June 13, 1932. [Class 124.] A flexible cutter-chain for cutting coal comprises a cable or chain 1 on which cutters 4 are strung loosely so as to be rotatable, sockets 2 being fixed to the ends of the cable &c., as by a poured metal filling 3, or by bending the ends and applying clamps, for connection through wire ropes &c. to means for reciprocating the cutter chain. The cutters may abut or be spaced by rings 7 or spirals, and may comprise hubs 5 with end teeth 6, or the teeth may extend through the length of the cutters. The bore through the cutters may taper towards the cutting end to permit tilting. The cutters may all face in one direction, or for cutting in both directions, adjacent cutters may face in opposite directions or each cutter may have at its ends teeth 6, 6a, Fig. 8a, acting in opposite directions ; alternatively, the opposite sets of cutters may be disposed one at each end of the cable &c. 1. Kerf-cleaning cups 8 may be provided at intervals.
