[Classes 75 (i) and 75 (iv).] An air-supply ring of substantial depth is inserted between the oil vessel and the upper part of an existing miners' or like safety lamp so as to transform the latter into one having an ample supply of air from the lower part of the lamp. In the form shown in Fig. 8, the ring A is threaded at A<1>, A<2> to screw into the bush B and oil vessel V, but it may be soldered, pinned, or otherwise definitely secured to either of these parts. The ring A is formed with wide slots A<3> fitted with fixed or detachable gauzes W and is protected by a guard ring R resting on the flange A<4> and preferably having a concave exterior to throw excess air away from the lamp and permit air to enter only from its upper part. The lamp is locked by means of a deep steel cuff C having teeth C' to engage the lock bolt carried by the vessel V. This cuff also acts as an air baffle, being slotted at C<2>, and its upper end C<3> is flanged to carry the inner glass G<2>. To allow for the increased height of the lamp a lengthened wick tube T is employed having its lower flange T<1> clipped or otherwise secured to the vessel V. The burner dome may be correspondingly lengthened, it may be carried by a perforated half-round case adapted to engage a correspondingly shaped burner, or the dome may have legs D<2> to embrace a member D<3> fitting over the tube T and secured in position as by means of a screw D<8>. In the form shown in Fig. 9, the air-supply ring comprises inner and outer parts A, A<5> each having gaps A<3> protected by gauze W, the outer ring A<5> resting on the flange A<4> and carrying a flange A<6> to receive the guard ring R. The latter is formed with an upper lip R<1> and the air admission opening is protected by a baffle plate R<5> carried by the bush B.
