Abstract
412,943. Clockwork-actuated valves. HORSTMANN, F. 0., HORSTMANN, J. H. G., and HORSTMANN GEAR CO., Ltd., Newbridge Works, Bath. Jan. 4, 1933, No. 291. [Class 135.] In automatic gas lighting and extinguishing apparatus of the type in which the gas valve is actuated at predetermined times by tappets 1, 2 on a dial plate rotated by clockwork, each ON tappet is constructed to open the valve in two stages, the first opening the gas supply to both a main and pilot burner, and the second shutting off the pilot, while each OFF tappet closes the main supply without re-opening the pilot supply, an igniter being associated with the pilot. The valve is closed in one stage. In the form shown, after the knife-edge 3 has been raised by the ON tappet to cock the lever 4, this lever is allowed to fall on to a projection 11 on the tappet so as to set the gas valve 7 in an intermediate position shown in Fig. 4, where gas passes from the supply 13 to the pilot pipe 12 and to a limited extent to the main pipe 14. After a few minutes, the edge 3 falls off the projection 11 and the valve 7 is rotated to the fully open position shown in Fig. 5. The ON movement of the lever 4 moves a pneumatic cylinder 15 to close a switch for a limited time to energize the igniting filament as set out in Specification 383,326, [Group XI]. The valve body B and the control apparatus A are releasably connected as set out in Specification 189,476, [Class 135]. According to the Provisional Specification the discharge lever 4 may be shouldered to engage a normal ON tappet, the OFF tappet being placed in a different plane. Specification 14825/11, [Class 135], also is referred to.
