Abstract

412,830. Supplying charge. BUCHI, A., Winterthur, Switzerland. Nov. 6, 1933, No. 30819. Convention date, Nov. 12, 1932. [Class 7 (ii).] In a rotary apparatus for supplying charge of the sliding vane type, exhaust gas from the engine is admitted and discharged by pipes 19, 20 and thus drives a rotor 17 as an expansion motor ; the charge is blown by an auxiliary compressor through a side port 22, a portion leaving by a diametrically opposite port, and a portion comprising the main charge is compressed and forced into the combustion chambers, through non-return valves 28. The auxiliary compressor, and a further impeller exerting a suction on the charge, may be mounted on the shaft of the rotor 17, the rotation of which may be assisted by a connection 29 to the crank shaft. A byepass from the exhaust manifold, controlled by a valve opened at the end of the exhaust periods, and connected by a pipe 30 to the exhaust pipe, allows scavenging air to be blown through the combustion chambers. The apparatus is cooled by water circulated through a jacket 36 by pipes 40, 41. A byepass 27, controlled by a non- return valve, allows air to be drawn into the combustion chambers at starting. In a modification, in which a separate apparatus is provided for each pair of cylinders, the separate rotors are mounted on the same shaft, which may be coupled to the crank shaft, and auxiliary exhaust valves are mounted in the cylinder heads through which a scavenging charge is blown direct to the exhaust pipe at the end of each exhaust period.
