Abstract

412,549. Hydraulic transmission of power. BEAUMONT, J. M., Dogley Villa, Fenay Bridge, near Huddersfield. Nov. 25, 1932, Nos. 33319/32 and 4093/33. [Class 69 (ii).] In hydraulic power transmission mechanism comprising driving and driven bladed members, relative axial movement between the members screens the blades of the driven member and simultaneously opens a transfer passage or passages so that liquid is discharged from the working chamber to a reservoir. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the, driving member b is moved axially by rods i<1> the connection having a slight amount of lost motion, and the transfer passages c<4> leading to the reservoir f are controlled by a member k fixed to the rods. Openings c<6> in a wall c<3> permit quick return of liquid to the working chamber when the coupling is to be restarted. The transmission may include an intermediate bladed member capable of being braked, and the member k may be carried by a sleeve instead of the rods i<1>, so that it may be prevented from rotating to act as a brake by blades thereon co-operating with blades in the interior of the casing c<1>. Another form comprises a separate reservoir m, Fig. 3, having an adjustable piston m<1>, to determine the quantity of liquid retained in the working chamber during normal running, a cooling system being positioned in the reservoir, or between it and the working chamber. A movable cap r is placed over the entry to the reservoir, and the driving member may have peripheral blades or throwers b<3>.
