Abstract

412,217. Control systems for consuming devices. HILL & SON & NORMAN & BEARD, Ltd., W., 372, York Road, Holloway, HOLOPHANE, Ltd., Elverton Street, Vincent Square, NORMAN, H. La F., 1, Lochbie, Crouch Hill, all in London, and WILLIAMS, R. G., 60, Elgar Avenue, Tolworth, Surrey. Dec. 21, 1932, No. 36212. [Class 38 (iv).] In colour lighting apparatus the illumination from each group of lamps 9, some of which have colour filters, is controlled by a separate reversible electric motor actuated dimmer which stops in an appropriate position for each colour effect, the stopping position being determined by a hunting switch in cooperation with manually operated means which determine the stopping position of the hunting switch. The contactor controlled reversible motors 4 are adapted to move the dimmer brushes 2b together with either the brushes 8, or the plates 1 carrying the conducting segments 6<i> and 6<o> and the insulating strip 7, when any one of the brushes 8 is energized in each set of apparatus. Each key 3 produces, on depression, a corresponding colour effect, energizing an appropriate brush in each hunting switch through one of the relays 8<r> or directly, the hunting switches or brush carriers and the dimmer brushes 2<b> then being moved until the energized brush 8 rests on the insulation 7. By reason of the arrangement of a spring 10 and contact fingers 11 and 12 in co-operation with each key as shown, when two keys are depressed together, only the key on the left (in the Figure) is effective. Each key when depressed is held down by friction or by a light spring and on depression momentarily energizes through contacts 14 and 13, a magnet 16 in co-operation with each of the other keys thus raising any depressed keys. Alternatively, arrangements as used in cash registers &c. may be used to prevent depression of more than one key at a time and to clock or release a depressed key when required. The main lighting circuit may be opened when required by depression of a key 3<a>. The hunting switch used may take the form of a cylinder. A modification is described (not shown) in which the brushes are arranged to co-operate with adjustable parallel conducting strips and are each supplied through a further strip or a flexible lead. An alternative dimming arrangement is described (not shown) in which the dimmers are operated through a cam arrangement by a single motor and hunting switch the switch having as many brushes as there are keys.
