Colour lighting systems comprising units each having lamps of three colours, with or without white lamps for pastel shades, for example, have a step controller for each unit wherein at each step a circuit for a desired resultant light colour is set up by switching in lamps of appropriate primary colours with resistances appropriate to the relative intensity required of each colour, the total current taken by the unit being controlled by a dimmer resistance. As shown in the Figure, for example, a contact arm (not shown) establishes in its initial position a circuit through a common dimming resistance 16 and contact 21 a circuit for blue light and for the coil of a remote switch 18 closing the said circuit and in successive positions gives admixtures of two strengths of red with the blue, pure red, admixtures of two strengths of green with the red, pure green, admixtures of two strengths of blue with green, pure blue and " off." The dimmer resistance may be provided with a short-circuiting switch and a series switch adapted to give sudden full light or black and these may be electromagnetically operated as shown. The single dimmer may be replaced by simultaneously actuated dimmers in the circuit of each colour lamp. A separate controller may be provided for the white lamp circuit, operated by a hand-wheel and this may be concentric with a hand-wheel for the main controller. The circuits controlled by the step controllers, in a system having a number of units, may be controlled by a master control to which they may be electrically connected through coupling switches, the dimmer resistances being also coupled mechanically to a master control. Resetting of the lighting may be obtained by the use of duplicated controls arranged in parallel or a repeating sequence of changes may be provided by continuously operating the controls as by an electric motor. The control elements may be arranged as panels.
