Abstract

411,599. Impedance networks. SUBMARINE SIGNAL CO., 160, State Street, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Batchelder, L. ; 22, Chauncy Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Feb. 13, 1933, No. 4402. Convention date, March 21, 1932. [Class 40 (iii).] A retardation line for locating a source of sound or like waves comprises a number of inductance elements connected in series, capacity elements connected in shunt between the series elements and a common, and a switching device which adjusts the length of the line by opening the common either between two adjacent shunt elements or on opposite sides of a shunt element. The switch is also adapted to introduce a capacity in series with one or more of the shunt elements in proximity to the opening in the common, and to provide a device short-circuiting one or more of the series elements opposite the opening in the common. Two groups of receivers are connected through retardation lines to the binaural retardation line consisting of the inductance elements 45, 46, Fig. 6, connected in series, together with shunt capacity elements 50, brushes 51 and the switching element 18 consisting of two conductors 19, 17, the adjacent ends of which are spaced by an insulating block 53. Each incorporates a capacity element 56 and conducting block 54, 55 spaced from the end of the main conductors by a distance approximately equal to the width of the brushes 51. The switch also includes two brushes 43, 44 bridging the inductance elements opposite the space between the adjacent ends of the conductors 17, 19. The arrangement is such that the line varies by half a compensator section at a time. The group retardation lines are connected at various points to contacts 31 ... 42 which are swept by two brushes 20, 30, moving with the switch 18.
