Abstract

411,221. R÷ntgen ray tubes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Klinckmann, A. ; 184, Craig Place, Lombard, Illinois, U.S.A.) Feb. 1, 1933, No. 3124. Convention date, Feb. 1, 1932. [Class 39 (i).] A method of joining glass walls having different co-efficients of expansion consists in fusing the glasses to a metal member that conforms to the shape of the walls. The method is intended particularly for forming a joint between tubes of soft glass and of hard borosilicate glass in the evacuation system of an X-ray tube. For this purpose, the soft glass tube 13<a> is welded by the usual means to the edge of a thimble 10 of copper-plated nickel steel. The end of a hard glass tube 17<a> is also welded, by the method described in Specification 392,421, to the edge of a second thimble 14 of nickel steel. The two thimbles, which have openings 11 in their ends, are secured to one another by means of silver solder, copper brazing, or by other suitable means to form a vacuum-tight joint. In a modification, the two tubes are joined by a single tubular sleeve of nickel steel.
