410,859. Endless - belt conveyers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and WHITELEY, A. L., 16, Vernon Avenue, Hillmorton Paddox, Rugby. Nov. 28, 1932, No. 33670. [Class 78 (i).] In a mechanism for regulating the lateral position of a moving web or band to prevent overcorrection, two detecting-devices are provided, actuated respectively by a movement of the web to the right and left of a desired position, together with a roller lapped by the web and having a normal position at right-angles to the plane of an edge of the web and adapted to be displaced angularly by electromagneticallycontrolled motive means actuated by the detecting-devices to effect a suitable lateral displacement of the web when one of the detecting-devices is operated, while the same motive means is simultaneously operative to move the detecting-devices transversely of the web in the direction of the displacement. Lateral displacement of the band conveyer 1 is controlled by horizontal displacement of a roller 2, which is pivoted about a vertical pin 3 at one end, and is provided at the other end with a block 5 into which is inserted a screwed spindle 6 adapted to be rotated in either direction by a reversible motor 9 which, when energized on account of lateral deviation of the band 1, thereby causes the guide roller 2 to pivot in such a direction as to correct this deviation. The motor is controlled by two detecting-devices comprising photo-electric cells 10, 11 receiving light through slits 12, 13, one or other of which is adapted to be covered according to the side to which the band deviates. Each cell controls a relay which operates according to which slit is obscured to start the motor in the desired direction, and the correction continues until the slit is again uncovered. To prevent overcorrection, the light-sensitive devices are mounted on a bar 14 which is coupled by a crank 15 to a shaft 16 connected by adjustable gearing to the spindle 6, so that when the band deviates and obscures a slit 12 or 13, the motor 9 is actuated to adjust the guide roller 2 and the photo-electric cell is also moved in such a direction that the slit is uncovered earlier than if the cell were stationary. The cells 10, 11 may be replaced by selenium cells or electrical contacts.
