Abstract
<PICT:0410511/IV/1> <PICT:0410511/IV/2> A plurality of artificial filaments are extruded and drawn all at the same varying linear speed so as to impart similar variations in denier to each filament, and associated as a thread, the lengths of filaments between the different spinning orifices and the point of association of the filaments being different, whereby corresponding variations in the different filaments occur at different places in the length of the thread. The <PICT:0410511/IV/3> filaments may be extruded in groups from points which lie at different distances from the point of association. The drawing of the filaments at varying linear speeds may be accomplished by any of the methods described in the parent Specifications and may be applied continuously with the production of the artificial filaments either by the wet coagulation or dry evaporative method. In Fig. 1 a spinning cell 10 is fitted with a number of supply pipes, filter candles, and jets 13, the latter being arranged at different levels. The groups of filaments are associated at the point 15 and all drawn similarly at varying linear speeds by the feed roller 18 and the three-armed member 23. Instead of the group of jets 13, there may be used a single dome-shaped jet having the spinning orifices 25 disposed in a spiral, as shown in Fig. 3. Again, as in Fig. 6, there may be used an inclined jet having the spinning orifices 33 arranged in a straight line. Inclined jets may also be employed in the arrangement of Fig. 1, the most convenient position being with the highest orifice of one jet at the same level as the lowest orifice of the next jet, and so on. A particular application of the threads produced is in the process of Specification 403,738, [Group IX], according to which artificial staple fibres are produced by stretching to breaking point a yarn having variations in denier along its length, the variations being of a frequency corresponding to the length of staple fibre desired.
