[Class 83 (iv).] In pilger rolling the spread ing of the billet into the side clearances during one pass, causes an uneven load on the trough of the grooves when the billet is rotated through 90‹ and passes through the next pass, so this is compensated for by shaping the grooves so that the pass is roughly oval at the beginning of the bite and then merges into a circular pass towards the end of the working zone. Fig. 4 shows a section of a roll in which alpha is the reducing zone, # the polishing zone and gamma the exit zone. Fig. 6 shows the cross sections of the grooves in radial planes for values of the angle alpha, so that the lengths of the curves are substantially proportional to the amount of material to be displaced so as to give uniform drawing out pressures at all points on the rolls. For rolls with clearance zones at the troughs of the grooves as well as at the sides as in Specification 369,627, the cross sections of the grooves are made to accommodate the previous spread of the metal into all these clearances when the work is rotated for the next pass.
