Abstract
409,905. Roundabouts. LAKIN, R. J., Besley Street, Streatham, London, and THURSTON, C. W. R., 60, Ketts Hill, Norwich. Dec. 19, 1933, No. 14331. [Class 132 (i).] Amusement apparatus of the kind in which passenger-carrying cars or the like are horizontally and independently movable on a travelling support, and the supports are driven over a circular undulating track by radial arms rotatable about a central vertical axis and having their outer ends guided by the track, whereby the undulations of the track tilt the supports and impart individual horizontal movement to the cars in addition to their up- and -down movement, is provided with brake mechanism for arresting the individual movements of the cars at will. As shown, the base 10, which has a drawbar 11, carries an electric motor 12 driving through gearing 13-16 a pinion 17 meshing with the annular gear 18 having rollers 19 running on a rail 20 supported on a structure 21 carrying at the top an annular platform 22. The gear 18 is supported against forces in a horizontal plane by rollers rotatable about a vertical axis and bearing against a rail supported by the structure 21. Radiating from the gear 18 are a plurality of girders 25 each connected to an upper annular extension of the gear 18 by knuckle-joints 26. Each girder 25 has at its outer end an axle 27 carrying a wheel 28 running on a circular undulating track 29 supported by framework 30. The radial girders 25 support an annular segmented floor 36, and each girder carries a drag-link connected to the flooring. Each pair of girders supports a circular rail 35 at the centre of which is a vertical axle 38 passing through the flooring 36 and through the base of a car 39, each of which has two wheels 40 bearing on the appropriate rail 35. Brake mechanism for the cars comprises a ring 41 forced upwards against the bottom of the car by a lever 42 connected by a cable 43 to a hand control 44, there being preferably one control 44 for each pair of cars.
