Abstract

405,725. Roundabouts. HAYHURST, R. P., 59, Railway Street, Nelson, Lancashire Aug. 31, 1932, No. 24295. [Class 132 (i).] A roundabout comprises a structure having guides for vehicles arranged radially and curving up towards the periphery, and means for rotating the structure to cause the vehicles to travel by centrifugal force towards the periphery. As shown, the roundabout A comprises guide rails 1 radiating from a hub 2 and curved upwardly towards the periphery where the ends are connected by ties, and ropes or rods 4 extend from the hub 2 to the ends of the rails. A roof 5 is provided over the central stationary platform 6. A rail 7 on the underside of the roundabout rests on flanged rollers 8 in bearings 9, while an internally toothed wheel 10 carried by the roundabout engages a pinion 11 driven through gearing 12 from an electric motor 13 controlled from the platform 6. A brake lever 15 actuates a brake working on the motor spindle. The roundabout may also be mounted on a circular rails by means of rollers. The rails 1 are of channel section and the vehicles B are fitted with four running wheels 19, two running in each rail, the extreme ends of the rails having stop members for limiting the outward movement of the vehicles. The rails of each pair may be spaced by cross members 20. In a modification each vehicle B could embody an electric motor and a propeller driven by the motor to effect rotation of the roundabout by aerodynamic action.
