Abstract

A layer of spongy rubber is formed on one or both sides of a flexible backing such as fabric, carpets, cardboard, paper and leather by calendering thereon without the use of solvents a rubber mix which is vulcanizable at a temperature between 70 and 140 DEG C. and contains swelling agents capable of forming gaseous products between these limits of temperature so that swelling occurs just before vulcanization, and thereafter vulcanizing by hot air. The rubber mix contains plasticizers such as palm oil, pine oil and paraffin, fillers and colouring materials such as zinc oxide, baryta and titanium white, sulphur and accelerators such as tetramethyl thiuram mono- or bisulphide in addition to swelling agents such as bicarbonate of ammonia or soda, ethyl alcohol and aqueous ammonia. A prior coating of adhesive may be applied before the rubber coating which may be talced after application. More than one rubber layer may be applied and two coated fabrics may be superposed and coated on their external surfaces. Vulcanization is effected in hot air ovens in which the fabric falls in folds between the rollers on which it is suspended.
