[Class 26.] In order to provide for silencing the noise created during the flushing of the pan, the upper rim of a water-closet is constructed or provided with a groove around the inside of the rim, in which can move a sliding shutter connected with the lid or seat, the arrangement being such that the shutter is moved across the closet to a closing position when the lid is lowered, and is opened when the lid is raised, or, is closed when the seat is raised and opened when the seat is lowered, as the case may be. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the shutter 22 is connected to the lid 20 by means of a lazy-tongs device 26 and links 29, 31 ; the shutter moves to and from the basin through a slot 13 in the same plane as the groove 13<a>, which has a sealing- strip 14. In another form, Fig. 5, the groove and slot may be formed in a member 11<a> which is affixed to the top of the basin. When the shutter is connected to the seat, the latter carries a frame carrying the connecting- mechanism. The seat or lid or both may have rings of soft rubber on their undersurfaces and the cover or the seat or the connecting-mechanism may be connected to the valve-lever of the flushing-cistern.
