Abstract

409,042. Supplying gas and air to furnaces. WEBB, A. W. OGILVY-, 42, Denman Drive, Golders Green, London. Nov. 3, 1932, No. 31019. [Class 51 (i).] In a gas-heated furnace of the kind in which the gas is introduced so as to form a layer under the roof or over the walls and air is introduced into the layer of gas through a number of apertures, the gas is introduced from one or both ends into a number of channels of comparatively narrow width open or partly open towards the furnace and separated by thin walls extending inwardly into the furnace and the air is introduced into the channels through apertures directed towards the furnace chamber. In the constructions described the invention is shown as applied to a furnace roof, this being formed with air channels 4 fed from pipes 10 at each end and communicating through slots 14 with gas channels 5 fed from pipes 7 at each end. In one construction, Fig. 4, the channels are formed by vertical members 21, 2<2> suspended from girders 24 and having platforms 3 extending on each side. The spaces above the platforms constitute the air channels 4 and are covered by tiles 6 supported by shoulders 16 whilst the spaces below the platforms constitute the gas channels 5. Adjacent edges of the platforms are shaped to form the air slots 14. The lower ends 2<2> of the vertical members are of bulbous shape as at 26 to constrict the outlets of the gas channels. In a modification, the platforms are replaced by apertured tiles carried by additional shoulders. In another modification, Fig. 6, the air channels are formed by suspended pipe sections having at the bottom apertures 14 for the air and channels 32 and ribs 33 serving to support members 2<2> of substantially I-shape which extend into the furnace to form the gas channels. In the form shown in Fig. 7, apertured tiles 18 separating the air and gas channels are supported from suspended vertical members 2<1> and in turn support lower vertical members 2<2>. In a further modification, Fig. 8, each apertured tile 18 has an upper vertical member 2<1> extending from one end and a lower member 2<2> from the other end. The constructions described, excepting that of Fig. 1, may also be built up on an end or side wall of the furnace.
