This invention relates to kilns for burning brick, tile and other clay products, and more particularly to down draft kilns.
The common type of down draft kilns now in common use comprises a plurality of fire boxes located at spaced intervals around the wall, and provided with hag walls extending upward for a certain distance within the kiln, the floor of the kiln being perforate and sup? ported upon spaced checkerwork walls provided with a flue communicating with the stack.
The objects of the present improvement are to change the bottom construction of the kiln in order to increase the eficiency of the kiln and produce a better draft downward through the perforate floor to the flue, and to facilitate cleaning of the kiln bottom.
The above and other objects may be at tained by increasing the depth of the kiln below the floor and providing a downwardly and inwardly inclined wall surrounding the kiln bottom, spaced transverse walls extending across the kiln bottom to support the perforate floor, said transverse walls being provided with aligned openings, forming a flue through the walls, communicating with the cross flues formed by the spaces between the transverse walls, a communication being provided between the outer end of this flue and the stack.
An embodiment of the invention is illusrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan sectional view through the improved kiln taken substantially on the line 1-1, Fig. 2, a portion of the perforate floor being broken away to show the transverse supporting walls; and
Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2, Fig. 1.

The drawing illustrates the invention as applied to a down draft kiln which may include the circular side wall 1, the crown 2, a series of fire boxes 3, located around the side wall and each provided with a bag wall 4, spaced within the side wall and terminating at a distance above the perforate floor 5, all

The downwardly and inwardly inclined walls 6 are located beneath the floor level and extend from the outer side wall 1 to the bottom level 7 which may be greater than the de'oth generally provided for kiln bottoms in standard practice.
A plurality of spaced transverse walls 8 extend across the kiln bottom, between the downwardly inclined lower walls 6, supporting the perforate floor 5. v

The spaces between the transverse Walls 8, as illustrated at 11, form transverse flues unrestricted throughout the length and breadth of the walls 8, all of which connect with the central exit flue formed by the arch openings 9, and as the walls 6 areinclined downward and inward, toward this central flue, there is a tendency for the products of combustion to follow the lines indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2, passing upward from the fire boxes, over the bag walls 4 and then downward through the perforate floor 5 and between the transverse walls 8 to the central flue formed by the arch openings 9.
