[Classes 31 (i) and 31 (ii).] In a bookbinding-machine of the type wherein knife-slits are cut in the leaves of the book close to the back edge and tapes are laced through the slits, the cutting of the slits being preferably preceded or accompanied by the cutting of narrow transverse slots extending from the back edge to some or all of the slits, the blades of the slit-cutting knives are slidable in guides and are afforded firm support on all sides during the cutting operation. The leaves of a book 1, Fig. 1, are pierced with elongated knife-slits 2 close to the back 3 of the book, and are laced with lengths 4 of tape, the ends of which may be stuck down upon the end sheets 5. Narrow transverse slots 6, slightly flared outwardly or with rounded edges, extend from the back 3 into some or all of the slits 2. The book 1 is placed on a vertically adjustable bed 7, Fig. 2, and is clamped by a plate 12. Thin slitting-knives 15 and lacing-blades 16 operated by cams slide in guides 13, 14, each blade 16 being a plain flat member arranged to lie flat close against a plain face of the corresponding knife 15, which is provided on its other face with a strengthening rib 17. A back gauge plate 18 is secured through spacing-plates 19, 19<1> to the bed 7 and clamping-plate 12 respectively, the plates 19, 191 being formed with a series of shallow recesses to receive the knives 15 and blades 16. A number of circular saws 23 are mounted on a rotating spindle 24 carried by slots 25 at the ends of arms 26 pivoted about a shaft 27, the spindle being also guided in slots 28 on the frame of the machine. The arms 26 are rocked, by cams, for example, to move the saws down between recesses in the gauge plate 18 and spacing-plates, across the back of the book to cut out the slots 6. The tapes 4 are fed from spools 29, by feed rollers 30, between a cam-operated knife 31 and a co-operating plate up to the gauge-plate 18. A rod 33 slidable in the bed 7 carries a combined head-gauge and book-discharger 34. When the book 1 is placed on the bed 7 and registered, the machine is set in operation. The plate 12 clamps the book, the saws 23 cut out the slots 6, the slitting-knives 15 descend to form the slits 2 and then ascend, the tapes 4 are fed against the gauge-plate 18 and are severed by the knife 31, and the lacing-blades 16 descend to push the tapes through the slits ; upon the ascent of the blades 16, the doubled-back ends of the tapes are trapped and left behind in the cavities 21 of the recesses in the spacing-plates. The clamping-plate 12 is now raised, the book pushed away by the discharger 34, and the saws 23 raised.
