Abstract
In a process for the production of tools and other objects subjected to abrasion, by pressing and sintering a pulverous mixture consisting of a hard metal carbide, boride, silicide, or nitride and one or more softer metals such as iron, cobalt, &c., with or without the addition of one or more hard metals such as tungsten, molybdenum &c., the mixture is subjected before, during, or after pressing to the influence of chemicals that attack the surfaces of the soft metal powder so that, at a slight sintering, if necessary, a coherent form piece is obtained which is mechanically worked to shape, and then finally sintered. The soft metal may be oxidized, for example by oxygen or chlorine at atmospheric or raised pressures, or chloridized by solid or dissolved ammonium chloride, or treated with other salts or dilute organic or inorganic acids. In certain cases a second pressing under high pressure is applied after the slight sintering.
