Abstract

A range of tool steel powder specifications is made from a stock powder, which stock powder can be of a known, e.g., tungsten or molybdenum grade powder or can be one that does not have a composition such that it is itself definable as a high speed steel powder, by adding to the stock powder a carbide powder in the form of a binary metallic carbide of any of the metals V,Ti, Nb, Ta, W, Mo, Cr, Zr, or Hf alone or in combination in the form of mechanical admixtures, solid solutions, double carbodes or ternary carbides, accompanied by the addition of carbon powder. The powder composition is then conventionally sintered and heat treated to produce high speed steel tools.
