407,876. Tube &c. winding machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Mansur, C. W. ; 32, Spruce Street, Malden, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Aug. 17, 1933, No. 23001. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1932. [Class 99 (ii).] A machine for winding edgewise a strip of woven fabric, treated with an adhesive such as artificial resin, to form a short tube, ring &c. comprises essentially a channelled former or mandril 51, Fig. 1, removably mounted on a rotatable and axially movable shaft 7, a member 26 fixed to the machine bed 1 and provided with a projecting collar 27 which is engaged by the channel 52 of the mandril during the winding operation, and a strip - feeding ring 19 mounted on a rotatable shaft 4 and adapted to be pressed against the bottom of a recess 29 in the member 26 by springs 21. In operation, Figs. 2 and 3, the end of the strip A is fed to the space between the ring 19 and surface of the recess 29 through a slot 31 in the fixed member 26, and the ring 19, which is provided with sharp-edged radial teeth 20, forces it round the recess to a diagonal slot 30 in the member 26 into which it is deflected by a bevelled plate 34 and which directs it into the channel of the mandril. The shafts 4, 7 are coupled by a shaft 9 in such a manner that the shaft 7 is driven at a slightly slower speed than the shaft 4 to compensate for the shortening of the strip A due to curving.
