Abstract

173,513. Merrick, F. W. Jan. 2, 1920, [Convention date]. Burnishing by compression.-The edge of upper leather and the like is burnished, while e the material is clamped at the extreme edge and held compressed in the direction of its thickness, by a burnishing action which carries the fibres towards the back of the material in the plane of its edge. The machine described comprises an annulus 1, mounted and rotating in an inclined plane, which supports and feeds the material a under a burnishing tool 2 carried on a shaft 3<s> rotating at a high speed. The tool projects into the opening of the annulus and fits close up to the edge thereof, and is shaped so that the material is squeezed and creased by a circumferential ridge 2<c> and the marginal portion and edge are burnished by portions 2<a>, 2<b> respectively of the tool. An edgeguide which fits close to the edge of the tool and enters the opening in the annulus, and a presserwheel 4 are also provided. These parts are elements of the machine described in Specification 156,571. In use, the edge of the material is slightly inclined to the tool, so that it contacts only with the downwardly-moving portion thereof, which therefore carries the fibres towards the back of the material in the plane of its edge.
