Abstract

406,703. Selective perforating-machines. CREED & CO., Ltd., and GRIFFITH, R. G., Telegraph House, Croydon. Sept. 2, 1932, No. 24497. [Class 31 (ii).] In a keyboard apparatus for the transmission of current impulses to a line or the perforation of tape in accordance with the code elements of a signal, a series of permutation bars is set for the case-shift signal combination on depression of a shift lever, which, on release, effects the setting of the bars for the reshift signal. The keyboard mechanism is arranged so that, in the extreme positions of the case-shift lever, the permutation bars are free to be moved by the depression of any of the signal keys. On depression of the shift key lever 6, which is always out of engagement with the bars 1 ... 5, a tooth 14 on a T-shaped lever 12, pivoted on an extension of the shift lever, engages a tooth 16 on a pivoted actuating bar 8, which engages inclined cam faces on the bars 1 ... 5 to effect their setting for the shift signal. Before the lever has completed its normal downward movement, an extension 18 of the T-lever engages a stationary pin 20 through which the tooth 14 is rocked out of engagement with the bar 8 which under the action of a spring 23 moves out of operative relation with respect to the bars 1 ... 5. Simultaneously, a tooth 15 moves into an actuating position with respect to a projection 17 on the reshift actuating bar 9. On the release of the key lever 6, the bar 9 engages inclined notches in the underside of the bars 1 ... 5 and effects their setting for the reshift signal. When the key-lever approaches the limit of its upward travel, the extension 18 engages the pin 19 rocking the tooth 15 out of engagement with the projection 17, then allowing the bar 9 to be moved by the spring 23 out of engagement with the bars 1 ... 5. Simultaneously, the tooth 14 is rocked into an engaging position with respect to the tooth 16 on the bar 8. The shift-lever 6 may be operated and locked, or solely locked subsequent to its independent actuation, by a locking lever 7 carrying a pin 24 co-operating with a slot in one arm of a pivoted member 25, which engages a pin 26 to lock the shift-lever 6 in the depressed position. To remove the shift-lock, the key lever 6 is further depressed and the pin 26 rides on an inclined surface 27 to remove the member 25 out of engagement with the pin 24, whereupon the lever 7 returns to its normal position in which it permits the lever 6, on release, to return to its normal position. Specification 388,785, [Group XL], is referred to.
