Abstract

760,565. Telegraph transmitters. TELETYPE CORPORATION. Dec. 10, 1954 [Dec. 10, 1953], No. 35808/54. Class 40 (3). In a telegraph transmitter provided with a rocker member for actuating the transmitter contacts under the control of interponents which are first selectively positioned with respect to the rocker member by means of code bars which are selectively displaced from an initial position in accordance with the permutation code elements of a signal to be transmitted and which interponents are then sequentially displaced by means of associated cams to tilt the rocker member in one direction or the other to actuate the transmitter contacts to transmit the signal, the movements of the interponents are restricted to predetermined paths by means of a motion-restricting member which serves to retain the interponents in their selected positions with respect to the rocker member whilst they are being sequentially displaced by means of their associated cams. The arrangement is such that at the same time as the rocker member is being tilted in one direction or the other by the sequentially displaced interponents to transmit the signal, those of the code bars which have been displaced from their initial position to selectively position the interponents with respect to the rocker members are enabled to be returned thereto for the code bars to subsequently react in accordance with the permutation code elements of the next signal to be transmitted. The operation of a key lever 11 allows code bars 12 to move selectively to the right under control of a bail controlled by a cam on a shaft released by the universal bar 16, as described in Specification 677,191. The interponents 19 slidably and rotatably mounted on a bar 21 are selectively rocked by the extensions 17 on the bars 12 so that abutments 27, 28 are respectively above vertical extensions 29, 31 on the rocker member 32 pivoted at 33 and connected by a rod 46 and lever 54 to the arm of a T-shaped contact lever 56 carrying contacts 57 associated with fixed contact points 58. The interponents 19 have follower portions 22 and are depressed sequentially by cams 15 on the shaft 14 so that the member 32 is rocked to actuate the contact lever 56. Following the operation of the code bars 12 and the setting of the interponents 19, the motion-controlling detent member 67 moves upwardly under control of spring 71 and cam 72 so that a knifeedge portion 73 which in conjunction with projections 75, 76 acts as a stop for the rocking movement of the interponents, co-operates with the knife edge projections 74 to lock them in their selected rotary positions so that during the operation of the rocker 32 to transmit a signal, those bars 12 which have been moved to the right, can be returned to their left-hand positions preparatory to their setting for the subsequent signal. The rocker 32 is retained in the position to which it is moved by two retainers 35, 36 having slotted engagement with studs 37, 38 and urged towards each other by a spring 39. As shown, the retainer 35 has its end in engagement with a projection 34 on the rocker 32 and when moved to the left it is cammed by a rod 42 so that its end is raised clear of projection 34 which is thereupon engaged by the left-hand end of the retainer 36, as indicated in Fig. 2 (not shown). A U-shaped member 62, biased by a spring 65, engages in a Y-shaped switch 61 in the member 56 which.is arranged to fulcrum about the contact 58 to be closed.
