Abstract

676,825. Type-printing telegraphy. TELE-TYPE CORPORATION. March 13, 1950 [March 19, 1949], No. 6218/50. Class 40 (iii). In a printing-telegraph selector mechanism comprising a plurality of cam - controlled selector members selectively conditioned by their respective cams to enable them to respond successively to the received signal impulses under the control of a member which is variably positioned in dependence on the positions taken up by the armature of the selector magnet, a pair of cam controlled armature-sensing levers together function to sense the positions taken up by the armature in following the successively received signal impulses and to lock the armature during each signal impulse interval in either of the two positions it can assume, one lever of said pair also serving to control the response of the selector members to the successively-received impulses whilst the other lever of said pair also serves to control the rotation of the selector cams. In the stop condition of the selector, the magnet 11 is energized and the armature 12 is held in its upper position against the action of a biasing spring 14. The end of the armature 12 is disposed between oppositely directed shoulders 19, 21 on armature-sensing members 15, 16 associated with cams 17, 18 on the receiving cam-shaft 26. In the stop position of the shaft 26, a projection 59 on the member 16 is opposite a recessed portion of the cam 18. When the start element is received the armature 12 moves downwardly under the action of the spring 14 and its end is engaged between the shoulder 19 on the member 15 and the flat surface 25 on the member 16 which moves inwardly under the action of its spring 24. A recess 57 of a cam 28 allows a bail 48 to move inwardly and under the action of a spring 122 a lever connected to the bail is rocked so that a projection 54 is moved clear of a tooth 55 on a stop disc 37. During rotation of the shaft 26 the raised portion of cam 28 holds the bail member 48 out of operative relation with the member 16, and spaced projections 62 on the cams 17, 18 co-operating with projections 58, 59 on the members 15, 16 allow the armature 18 to respond to the received signal impulses at about the centre of the impulse period. In response to a mark impulse the member 16 is blocked and the member 15 moves forward under the action of a spring 22, the end of the armature being engaged between the shoulder 21 of lever 16 and a flat portion 23 on the member 15 which carries a rod member 64 engaging with surfaces 69 on selector members 41 ... 45 which have projections 68 associated with helically-disposed recesses on selector cams 31 ... 35. When the member 64 moves forward followed by the member 41 ... 45 the end of an interponent member 72, resting on the lower surface of an opening 71 of the member 41 ... 45, drops on to a step 73 and subsequent outward movement of the member 41 ... 45 displaces the interponent 72 to the left so that its end 75 engages the arm 89 of one of five pivoted members 81 ... 85, mounted on a shaft 86. Each member 81 ... 85 is provided with a second arm 88 individually associated with a depending arm 90 of five Y-shaped members 91 ... 95, having confronting portions 99, 100 engaging opposite surfaces of slide members 101 ... 105 pivotally linked to selector members 144 controlling the printing or like operation.. The slides 101 ... 105 are selectively moved in one or the other of two directions by blades 108, 109 engaging with oppositely disposed shoulders 106, 107 on the slides. The blades 108, 109 are connected by links 118, 119 to a pivot 121 on a bar 113 connected to a link 114 oscillated by a shaft 115. Towards the end of a revolution of the shaft 27, an arm 141. engaged by a cam 36 raises a bail 142 lifting the members 72 which have been operated so that their ends are restored to the openings 71. The operation of either or both of the Y-levers 91, 92 engages an extension 148 of a Y-lever 147 to move a slide 157 which is moved with the slides 101.... 105 during the operation of the blades 108, 109 for the purpose described in Specification 676,779.
