Abstract
405,942. Power-driven hand planes. ESPUJOLS, P. D', Chemin Jouquet, CaudÚran, Gironde, France. May 10, 1932, No. 13487. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, May 12, 1932]. [Class 145 (i).] In a plane having a mechanicallyactuated cutter, the cutter is so mounted in the plane stock as to be adjustable therein to regulate the depth of cut. The spindle 4, Fig. 1, carrying the cutter 15, Fig. 6, and driven by a compressed-air motor 34, is mounted in a hub 7 sliding vertically in a housing 19 in the plane stock. A bell-crank lever 21 engages a recess in the hub, and is connected by a knuckle-rod 23 with a hand-lever 24 mounted adjacent the handle 25 of the plane, a spring 29 maintaining the parts in contact. A spring 26 attached to the cheeks of the stock and to the lever 21 normally urges the hub 7 upwards, but pressure on the lever 24 depresses the cutter towards the work by a readily controllable amount. The vertical travel of the hub 7 is limited upwardly by a collar 8 on the hub abutting a shoulder on the housing, and downwardly by the contact of a ring 9 with a cam surface 31 adjustable by a lever 37. The stroke of the hand lever 24 may be limited by a screw abutment 33. The motor is controlled by a trigger 36. In a modification, Fig. 8, the cutter 15 driven by a chain from the motor 34 is carried by a housing 1 pivoted at 39 to a base plate 38 and also joined thereto by links connected to a spring-pressed hand lever 24. In a further modification, Fig. 10, the cutter 15 and motor 34 are mounted on a carriage which is vertically adjustable relative to the stock by a screw 37. In another modification, Fig. 15, the cutter spindle 4 is mounted on a pivoted lever 49 and depressed into contact with the work by a lever 24 bearing on the lever 49 ; the downward travel is limited by a screw adjusted stop 37, and the cutter is overhung outside the plane stock. Fig. 12 shows a cutter consisting of a chain, the links of which are formed as cutters. Several of these chain-cutters may be employed, their runs being stepped. The cutter in any of the modifications may be driven by compressed-air motors, electric motors, flexible shafts or equivalent mechanism.
