PORTABLE ELECTRIC PLANER Filed July 2. 1948 2 SHEETS-SHEET 2 Patented .Ian. 29, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PORTABLE ELECTRIC PLANER William F. Draper, Chico, Calif, Application July 2, 1948, Serial No. 36,676
This invention relates to the official class of wood working and more particularly to electric planers.
One of the objects of this invention resides in the provision of a portable wood working planer having a cutting blade and shaving blower operated by an electric motor mounted thereon.
Another object of this invention resides in the combination of the frame, cutting blade, exhaust blower and electric motor as disposed relative to the shaving exhaust passage therein.
A further object of this invention resides in the particular construction of the hood and manner of hinging and looking it to the base of the plane.
A still further object of this invention resides in the particular construction of the base and hood of the plane.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be hereinafter more particularly set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims and, although this disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved to resort to such departures therefrom as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application;
Fig. 1 is a side view of the planer.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a rear view of the planer.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken approximately on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the base of the planer.
Fig. 6 is a bottom view of the hood.
In the present illustration of this invention the numeral 5 designates, in general, a portable wood working planer consisting of an elongated base 6 having a laterally extending slot 1 formed therein adjacent its forward end 8. Said base is provided with upstanding lugs 9 and Ill disposed along the forward and rear edges of the slot 1 with their opposed surfaces II and 12 forming segments of a circle having its center approximately at the axis of the shaft of a rotary cutter to be hereinafter set forth. The lug 9 is of lesser height than the lug l and is dis posed rearwardly of the forward end of the base to form a seat 13 for the forward end [4 of a hood l hinged to the rear end of the base by short pins l6 extending through companion ears I1 and I8 formed on the rear ends of the hood and base at their sides so as to provide an 2 Claims. (Cl. 145--5.1)
exhaust passage I9 therebetween for shavings removedfrom a board or the like by arotary cutter C journalled in the hood over the slot in the base and directed rearwardly between the base and hood by a blower B having its blades E disposed under the hood rearwardly of the cutter.
The aforesaid hood has its forward portion F arched over the cutter and blades of the blower with its forward end merging into a forwardly extending lug 20 which is removably fastened to the base by a suitable thumb-nut 2| or the like to rigidly secure the hood and base together and also dispose the cutter in contact with the material being operated upon, it being within the purview of this invention to provide means for adjusting the cutter for deep or shallow cuts in the material or substitute any type of rotary cutting tool for that shown herein just so the gist of the invention is not altered. The arched portion F of the hood merges at its rear end into a platform P to support an electric motor M which is braced to the arch portion of the hood by a web W and connected to the shafts N and O of the cutter and blower by suitable power transmitting means which in the instant case are shown in the form of conventional pulleys K keyed to the shafts of the electric motor, blower and cutter with a V-shape belt H trained thereover.
Formed on the base beneath the aforesaid platform are upstanding pillars S or the like adapted to assist the sides of the hood in supporting the weight of the motor. Said pillars are so disposed in the exhaust passage that shavings and the like expelled rearwardly by the blower will freely flow thereby and between the hinged lugs of the hood and base.
With this portable electric operated planer constructed as heretofore set forth, the operator thereof is protected against injury from the moving elements of the same and also from interference in performing his work by shavings flying in his face and line of vision.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. A portable electric planer comprising a base having a laterally extending slot therein rearwardly of its forward end, upstanding lugs having opposed arcuate surfaces formed on the front and rear edges of the aforesaid slot, apertured ears formed on the rear sides of the base, a hood disposed over the base, a platform formed on the rear portion of the hood, apertured ears formed on the rear end of the platform, short pins hingedly connecting the ears of the base and platform together and forming an uninterrupted outlet from a shaving exhaust passage between the platform and the base, a forwardly extending lug formed on the hood and normally resting on the base forwardly of the forward lug of the slot therein, a fastening element engaging the forward lug on the hood and securing it to the base, 7
a rotary cutter journalled in the hood with its blades traversing a circle extending through and outwardly of the slot in the base, a blower disposed in the hood rearwardly of the cutter, an electric motor mounted in the platform, pulleys on the shafts of the cutter, blower and electric motor, a' belt trained over the aforesaid pulleys and transmitting power from the electric motor to the cutter and blower, and spaced pillars formed on the base and partially supporting the platform with the electric motor thereon.
2. A portable electric planer comprising an elongated fiat base having a laterally extending slot therein 'rearwardly of its forward end, an upstanding lug formed on the base rearwardly of its front end having an arcuate rear wall merging into the front wall of said slot and a perpendicular front wall terminating at the upper surface of the base, a substantially inverted journalled on the sides of the hood and operable between the aforesaid lugs with its lower portion extending below the lower surface of the base, a blower journalled on the sides of the hood rearwardly of the last mentioned lug with its peripheries operating close to the base and arcuate rear wall of the rear lug, a platform including sides formed on the rear end of the hood, apertured ears formed on the rear ends of the sides of the platform with the apertures therein aligning with those in the ears on the base, short pins pivotally connecting the aforesaid ears together and hingedly supporting the hood on the base, staggered pillars formed on the rear portion of the base with their upper ends bearing against the lower surface of the platform when in normal position an electric motor mounted on the platform rearwardly of the hood, power transmitting means connecting the motor to the cutter and blower, and means securing the front end of the hoodto the base.
