[Classes 60, 145 (i), and 145 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A universal woodworking machine adaptable for purposes such as vertical spindle moulding, tenoning, stair housing, surface planing, moulding, boring, mortising, cross-cutting, and the like comprises a frame supporting both a worktable and a prime mover which is directly associated with the cutting tool and is carried by pivoted, rotatable, and slidable means which allow it to be moved to actuate the tool in any desired position either above or below the table. In the machine shown, an electric motor 3 carries a transverse tool spindle 7 which it drives through helical gears, the cylindrical body of the motor being rotatably mounted in a housing 4 so that it may be turned to bring the spindle from the horizontal position shown in Fig. 1 to the vertical position shown in Fig. 4. The housing 4 is rotatably mounted by means of a trunnion or pivot 9 on the underside of a base 8 slidably mounted in a vertically-movable part 16 of the work-table. Locking means 20, 21 secure the base 8 in position at either end of the part 16, and rollers 19 may be provided to facilitate the sliding movement. The movable part 16 of the table is mounted on the top of a frame, the uprights 22 of which slide in guides 22a on the side of the machine frame, vertical movement being effected by a screwed shaft 24 engaging in the frame cross-member 23a and rotated through gearing by a hand wheel 29. In this way the part 16 may be raised to bring the spindle 7 above the table for operations such as tenoning, cross-grooving, cross-cutting, and tool grinding. For planing a separate attachment with its own frame, table, and cutter spindle may be used, the main machine being adjusted as shown in Fig. 3 and serving only a source of power.
