Abstract
405,679. Door - operating apparatus. DURR, E. J., 26, Adam Street, Baker Street, London, and OSBORNE, F., 17, Shortlands Gardens, Bromley, Kent. Aug. 9, 1932, No. 22306. [Class 65 (i).] Relates to operating mechanism for sliding windows, doors, and the like, of the kind in which a rotatable pinion mounted on the fixed frame engages a rack secured to the movable element. According to the invention, the disengagement of the pinion from the rack is prevented by a flanged guide which slidably engages with the rack or the rack housing. In one construction, the rack 2, Figs. 6 and 8, consists of a flat perforated bar which is secured by screws to a window sash A. The guide 1, which is secured to the window frame B is of channel section and has inturned flanges 1a for engaging the rack. The pinion 3 is mounted on a shaft 7 in a housing 5 and is actuated by a handle 16 through gear wheels 8, 9, shafts 10, 23, and worm and worm wheel 12, 11. The shaft 23 is made in two lengths interconnected by a coupling 24 and its squared ends 23b engage in corresponding recesses in the shaft 10 and worm shaft 11a. To reduce friction, a roller 15 is journalled in bearings 2e formed on the rack and bears against the frame B. In a modification, the rack 2, Fig. 4, is mounted in a housing 4 having flanges 4a with which the flanges 1a of the guide 1 engage. The pinion 3 is connected by gearing to the operating handle 16, all of the gear wheels and their shafts being mounted in the housing 5. A spring-controlled anti-friction roller may be mounted on the vertical edge of the sash opposite to that to which the rack is connected.
