Abstract

405,384. Valve gear ; casings. DOUGLAS MOTORS (1932), Ltd., and PULLIN, C. G., Kingswood, Bristol. Sept. 16, 1932, No. 25823 and 25825. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] Overhead valves are actuated from a cam shaft 5 more or less parallel to the cylinder by means of short push-rods, which together with the cams 14 are mounted in a casing 8, and rockers 18 one arm of which engages the valve stem, while the other arm and the spindle on which the rocker is mounted are within the casing 8. The casing is attached to the cylinder head at 9, and is connected to the crank case 6 by a tubular casing 7 enclosing the cam shaft. The cam shaft may be made in detachable sections 11, 5, 13. Oil is pumped from the crank case through a passage 24 formed in the walls thereof, and a passage 25 communicating by a duct 26 with a passage 27 in the part 11 of the cam shaft, through the hollow shaft 5, to passages 28 in the cams, and thence into the casing 8 and back to the crank case, either by a pipe, or, in the case of vertical engines, through the cam-shaft casing 7. The oil pump 21 is driven by gears 23 from the cam shaft, and is surrounded by gauze. Alternatively, the oil may be supplied by gravity from a separate tank, to which the oil is returned from the crank case by a pump.
