Abstract

An adhesive particularly for use in the shoe industry comprises rubber latex in which the ammonia smell has been "killed" by the addition of formaldehyde, and the alkalinity restored by another amine. Substances to increase tackiness may be added. According to an example, 24\ba1/2\be gals. of rosin oil are emulsified with 12\ba1/2\be gals. of water. To 10 gals. of this emulsion are added 52\ba1/2\be gals. of water, 34 gals. of 60 per cent. latex, 2 gals of trimethanolamine, and finally 1\ba1/2\be gals of 40 per cent formaldehyde. Specifications 257,885, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], and 405,296 are referred to.ALSO:Ammonia-preserved latex is treated with formaldehyde to "kill" the ammonia, and the alkalinity is preserved by the addition of further amine, such as an ethanolamine or triethylamine, to bring the pH value up to not less than 8. The latex may be employed in the manufacture of adhesives for use in the shoe industry, for which purpose it may be compounded with substances to increase the tackiness. According to an example, 24 1/2 gals of rosin oil are emulsified with 12 1/2 gals of water. To 10 gals of this emulsion are added 52 1/2 gals of water, 34 gals of 60 per cent ammonia preserved latex, 2 gals of triethanolamine, and finally 1 1/2 gals of 40 per cent formaldehyde. Specifications 257,885, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], and 405,296, are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 contains numerous examples of adhesives which comprise latex preserved as above and also protected by the use of casein or tannates. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
