Abstract
405,160. Universal joints. MECHANICS UNIVERSAL JOINT CO., 9th Street, Rockford, Illinois, U.S.A. May 18, 1933, No. 14452. Convention date, June 6, 1932. [Class 80 (ii). A method of making a Hooke's joint, shown complete in Figs. 1 and 2, includes the step of grinding the bearing-blocks 9 for the trunnions 8 of the intermediate cross-member 7, whilst they are in place on a rotating fixture 30, Fig. 3, having posts 31 corresponding to the trunnions 8. Arcuate surfaces 29 are ground on the blocks by a rotating disc 36, and these abut, when the joint is assembled, against internally arcuate surfaces on shoulders 28 projecting laterally from the machined shaftyokes 5 of the joint, so as to take end-thrust of the trunnions, which is transmitted through surfaces 26 at their outer ends. The bearing- blocks 9 also have radial lugs 18 engaging milled grooves 17 in the machined faces of the yokes 5. Bolts 20 pass loosely through holes in the yokes to clamp the blocks 9 without locating them. The grinding fixture 30 is formed with a flange 37 having grooves 38 corresponding to the grooves 17 of the yokes. The overall distance between the ends of opposite posts 31 exceeds the corresponding distance on the trunnions by 0.001-0.005 ins. to allow a predetermined endclearance in the trunnion-bearings. The posts 31 are split to provide a snug fit in the blocks, and their ends are chamfered. The blocks 9 are further located on the fixture 30 by spring- loaded balls 35, and the fixture is centred at 39. The blocks 9 are fitted with roller bearings 23, and the trunnion-member 7 of the joint is hollow, having its sides closed by welded plates 12. Lubricant is introduced into the trunnionmember by a screw plug 13, air escaping through a check-valve 14. The bearings communicate with the lubricant space through radial bores in the trunnions.
