[Class 100 (i).] Feeding webs; cutting-apparatus.-In connection with a machine for printing a plurality of impressions on a continuous band or tape as described in Specifications 404,408 and 404,534, a feeding mechanism is provided comprising a primary feeding device having means for gripping the band and feeding it through the machine for the first of the said operations, a perforating device, and one or more secondary feeding devices having means for positively engaging the perforations of the band or tape to feed it through the machine for the second and successive operations. The web 27 is fed forward intermittently by a reciprocating gripper 94, Fig. 4, which is adjustably mounted in the arm 93 of a bell-crank lever 92 pivoted to a reciprocating carriage 88 which moves on a guide 87, Fig. 1, and is frictionally hold in engagement therewith by means of adjustable spring-pressed shoes 98<1>. The carriage is reciprocated by means of a link 85 operated by a crank-arm on a shaft 68 which is oscillated from the printing-machine. As the link 85 moves to the left the gripper 94 is raised and the lever 92 engages a stop 98 on the carriage 88. After the primary feed motion, the tape is perforated by a punch actuated by a lever fitted to an arm 109, Fig. 1, and operated by a universal joint connection with a lever oscillated in unison with the shaft 68. After the tape is perforated it is passed down under the machine and fed back through the machine in the same direction and in parallel relationship to its first course, and a further number of similar loops are formed so that successive operations may be performed on the tape. The secondary feed operations are performed by spring-pressed dogs 73, which are mounted in a reciprocating carriage 64 and engage the perforations produced in the web by the punching-apparatus. The tapes are guided transversely by fixed guides 81, which engage the adjacent edges of two loops of the tape, and by spring-pressed pivoted guides 80, 82 which engage the outer edges of the same.
