Abstract

404,392. Window-cleaning devices. DIXON, A., 7, Hannah Street, Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Aug. 18, 1933, No. 23162/32. Addition to 376,119. [Class 138 (i).] In a windowcleaning device such as described in the parent Specification, each wiper-holder is provided with front and rear pads and is pivotally mounted so that one or other of t he pads may be presented to the pane, reversal of the holder being effected b y rack and pinion means. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each wiper is in two parts, each part consisting of a holder 18 with clips 18a to retain the pads 19 in place. The holders are mounted on the ends of a rod 58 which is rotatable within a sleeve 61 pivotally connected by a screw 50 to the end of the wiper-carrying rod 17. A T-shaped spring 64 secured to the rod 17 has plugs 66 adapted to engage holes 62 in the sleeve 61 and notches in the rod 58. The rod is provided with toothed rings 59, each adapted to be engaged by a rack 70 on one end of a lever 71. The other end is connected to a vertical slidable rod 73, the lower end of which is pivotally connected to a bell-crank lever 75. One end of the lever is spring-pressed against the bracket 5. Normally the rack 70 is out of engagement with the toothed ring 59, but when the pads 19 require to be reversed, the upper part of the vertical arm 8 is pulled away from the pane 13, causing the lower part to move towards the bracket 5, whereby the lever 75 is rocked and, through the rod 73, brings the lever 71 into a horizontal position. On moving the wiper 18 upwardly the toothed ring 59 engages with the rack 70 so that the wiper is reversed, the spring-pressed plugs 66 being disengaged from the notches in the rod 58 and engaging other notches brought into position by the half revolution of the rod. The carrier member engaging the window sill is in two parts 1, 1a having interengaging stepped edges 1b secured together by removable pins 1c. The pads 19 are adapted to be reversed in a similar manner in the construction shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8, wherein the vertical movements of the wiper devices are effected by screw and nut means. The brackets 5 are each provided with side cheeks 78 and a horizontal ledge 79 in which is mounted the spindle of the bevel wheel 42. The upper end of the spindle carries a member 80 in which is pivotally mounted a ball 81, the ball being also pivotally mounted in the jaws of a member 82 fixed to the lower end of the externally-threaded spindle 31. The vertical arm 8, which is pivotally connected at 6 to an extension of the bracket 5, is provided with an arcuate slot 84 in each side wall 7 for engagement by a stud 85 extending from a cheek 78 of bracket 5, The studs and slots limit the outward movement of the arm 8 about the pivots 6. Each inner vertical arm 25 is guided during its vertical movements by two rollers 86 supported from each of the side walls 26 of the arm 25, the rollers having portions of reduced diameter adapted to travel in the vertical slots in the side walls 7 of the outer vertical arm 8.
