[Class 78 (iv).] In order to increase the span and decrease the height of a grab of the type comprising spreader arms 4, and to impart a combined digging and scraping action to the buckets, the bucket arms 7 are connected by links 9 to the cross-beam 11, Fig. 2, and the outer edges of the buckets are connected by links 17 to pillars 15 on the cross-beam. When the cross-beam is raised from the position shown, the links 17 prevent approach of the spreader arms 4 and the buckets turn about the pivots 5, the bucket arms 7 and the links 9 turning upwardly. The pair of links 9, and also the pair 17, are preferably provided with interengaging teeth as shown. In a modification, Fig. 4, the lower sheave-block 28 is carried by a main cross-beam 20 moving along guides formed by pillars 27 on a supplementary cross-beam 21. The links 9 are pivoted on the beam 21 and are connected with the beam 20 by interengaging links 24. The pivots 26 for the links 24 form tie-bars. The outer edges of the buckets are connected at 30 to links 29 pivoted on the pillars 27 by pins 31 which may have a limited vertical movement therein.
