Abstract

403,992. Electromagnetic switches. EVANS, 0., 27, Chancery Lane, London.- (Stotz-Kontakt Ges.; 1, Volta Strasse, Neckarau, Mannheim, Germany.) May 24, 1932, No. 14768. [Class 38 (v).] An electromagnetic change-over switch operated by successive energizations of an electromagnet i has an armature formed of a number of parts, three as shown, the central part e being secured to a sliding rod a carrying bridging contacts b at its ends whilst the outer portions h are loosely mounted on the rod a. A dead-centre spring mechanism k is provided as shown to hold the rod a in one or other of its extreme positions in which it bridges contacts c on contacts d. On energization of the solenoid the central armature part e and one of the outer parts f or g move together towards the centre of the solenoid. At this point the solenoid circuit is arranged to be automatically broken. The kinetic energy of the core part e and contact rod carry the latter across the dead-centre position of the spring mechanism k which then automatically completes the motion of the operating rod causing the opposite pair of fixed contacts c or d to be bridged. The three portions of the core are together equal or nearly equal to the length of the solenoid and the outward motion of the loose outer parts is limited by casings j attached to the solenoid ends, their inward movement being limited by flanges h engaging these ends. Instead of providing separate contacts operated by the movement of the rod a for de-energizing the solenoid when the armature part a is at or about its central position the energization and de-energization of the electromagnet i may be effected at contacts c or d. In this arrangement the energization of the magnet suffices to impart sufficient momentum to the middle and one of the outer of the armature parts to carry the part e beyond the mid position.
