Abstract

818,172. Electrically-tripped switches; electromagnetic switches. REYROLLE & CO. Ltd., A. Nov. 7, 1955 [Nov. 8, 1954], No. 32250/54. Class 38 (5). Energization of a coil C attracts an armature A<SP>1</SP> on the upper end of a vertical shaft A towards a magnet core C<SP>2</SP> against the action of a return spring A<SP>5</SP> connected at one end to an arm A<SP>4</SP> on the shaft, whereby a number of pinlike bridging contacts D carried by spring arms A<SP>3</SP> on the shaft make or break contact with respective pairs of fixed contact pins D<SP>1</SP>, D<SP>2</SP>. The shaft A is held in its operated position on de-energization of the coil C by a projection G4 on a latch G, pivoted at G<SP>1</SP>, which moves from its normal position, Fig. 8, to its latching position, Fig. 9, under the action of a spring G3 upon movement of the arm A<SP>4</SP> to its operated position. Movement of the latch G to its latching position releases a plunger F<SP>1</SP> which drops a limited distance and locks the latch, thus preventing undesired tripping of the switch due to shock. As shown, this dropping of the plunger also de-energizes the coil C by striking a lever E<SP>3</SP> pivoted at E4 and biased by a spring E<SP>5</SP>, the lever carrying a bridging contact E co-operating with fixed contacts E<SP>1</SP> connected in the coil circuit. The switch may be electrically tripped, in which instance the plunger Fl and latch G are magnetic and the plunger is surrounded by a tripping coil F having a yoke F<SP>2</SP>, F3, energization of the coil F causing the plunger to be raised, whereupon the latch is attracted to the yoke and the arm A<SP>4</SP> is returned by the spring A<SP>6</SP>. In another construction, the yoke F<SP>2</SP>, F<SP>3</SP> is omitted and the upper end of the plunger engages the latch to trip the switch. Further, the coil F may also be omitted (Figs. 5-7, 10, 11, not shown) and the plunger raised manually by means of a handle to trip the switch.
