Abstract

182,282. Matt, G. May 24, 1921. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Electromagnetic switches for the distant control of electric lamps &c. comprise a four-armed armature wheel t, Fig. 1, which rotates step-by-step to different contact positions, when any one of the distant switches is operated and released, under the action of oppositely-disposed electromagnet poles r, s. The armature spindle k carries a starshaped contact-member x engaged by fixed contact springs p. The ends of the four-armed armature have upwardly-bent circumferential extensions m to ensure that, when the electromagnets are energized by the distant switch, the radial arms of the armature assume a definite position in line with the poles. In this position the four contact springs have just passed the dead-centre points in relation to the star-shaped contact-member, all the faces of which are of conducting material except one. When the electromagnets are de-energized, by the opening of the distant switches, the contact springs react upon the contact-member and cause a further rotary movement to the next switching position and locate the next two arms of the armature near the poles ready for the next movement. The four positions provide for an off-position and for positions in which one, two, or three lamps are in the main circuit. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 4, the further mechanical movement subsequent upon the electromagnetic movement is provided for by a crownwheel o<1> on the rotary contact member, acting in conjunction with a simlar wheel o<2> mounted in the base to yield vertically under the control of a spring F. To provide for use with alternating currents where it may happen that the value of the current is zero when the distant switch is released, the symmetrical relative disposition of the arms of the armature and the electromagnet poles is disarranged.
